Buffie the Body: Healthy, My Ass

This is a repost since I’ve been on the run lately. The other day I was in the gym and overheard a conversation. One girl said “I look fine I just want to get rid of my flabby arms”. I looked at her and thought “hmm…you need to lose more than arms” First you can not spot reduce fat and second of all, why are all these girls infatuated with having a big butt like Buffie the body? Now I can not lie…I look but let us not confuse thick with healthy and let us begin to define black fitness!

This article has been floating around the web. I won’t take any credit for it, but I thought it was interesting.

According to a Village Voice article by Ben Westhoff, there are a slew of “urban” magazines finding success with men of color by replacing the traditional photo spreads of well-known bony models and actresses with unknown, “round the way sisters.” Looks and fitness — not required. Gi-normous butts (and weaves) — must have. Buffie, with a 45-inch ass, is the reigning queen of this scene and her popularity speaks to blacks’ normalization of a very un-p.c. fatness. Besides being a cover girl, Buffie appeared in the movie “ATL” as Big Booty Judy and is “as recognizable in the black community as some supermodels.”

I don’t see how Buffie’s the body is promoting obesity in our community. I see her body as unattainable and it certainly would not influence me to drink a ton of supplement shakes to fatten up my ass. I think her body shows the variety in WOC (women of colors) bodies. I think companies like McDonald’s, our causing our communities much more damage then Buffie the body. McDonald’s is trying to promote themselves as if they have healthy food. I have seen advertisements in Essence and during “Black in America” where McDonald’s was really trying to promote their “healthy items”….I’ll save that for another post. Back to Ms. Dickerson

According to the Voice, Buffie “eats nothing but junk food and sugary drinks, and she doesn’t work out.” Starting out at only 120 pounds 10 years ago, she developed her “attributes” by chugging supplement shakes in order to gain weight. “Black women don’t want to be skinny,” she said.

To my knowledge supplement shakes are healthy, so I don’t see the problem. It’s not like she had extra fat implanted in her butt. Buffie eats junk food and sugary drinks like a lot of WOC. She is no different than many women that I know.

It’s fairly common knowledge that many black (and Hispanic) men prefer their women larger than do other groups, a reality that launched Buffie on her path to glory. It is perhaps less well known that that preference has contributed to extremely high levels of obesity among black women.

It does appear that Black men like women who are more than just skin and bones, I don’t see the problem with that. Has this preference really contributed to extremely high levels of obesity among black women? She doesn’t site any research so we can’t be sure. We can be sure that are there a ton of other factors that contribute to obesity rates like; lack of access to safe areas, lack of education, lack resources (how to care for your hair, eat right), time, money for fresh foods, etc. I wish she spent some time focusing on some of this issues and offering some suggestions, that would have been more worth her time.

I don’t think that Debra Dickerson brought anything new to the table. We already know that we are in danger with our alarming obesity rates. Blaming Buffie the Body or Black Men for our problem will do nothing for us. We have to help each other. I mentioned in a previous post that some of us are privileged. We have access to a gym, money to buy fresh fruits and veggies, and time to take care of ourselves. Those of us that are privileged have to help other women. Encourage your sister, cousins, friends to make arrangements to exercise. Help them find and use the resources that are available to them.

POM Wonderful GIVEAWAY FREE POM!

OK…so normally I’m not a fan of juice. Why? Because it’s usually not juice. I frequent the Whole Food Markets a lot and I usually walk right past the funky curvaceous bottle called POM. Why? Honestly it’s a little on the pricey side and no juice can simulate the sensation of little explosions of juiciness of the pomegranate fruit.

But this is a good week. The good people of POM sent me some samples and boy was I holding out on the good stuff. It wasn’t tart but it was strong and since I was doing a 2 day detox, I diluted a small 8oz bottle with a gallon of water and lemon and it carried me through the day. Here is a little secret about POM …it’s 100% JUICE FROM THE FRUIT. No sugars, no fillers, no water, no junk…just juice.

Snack of the Week: Hard Boiled Eggs

Eggs are one of my all time favorite foods, are often completely misunderstood, and have a special place in my heart. In their entirety (meaning the whole egg) they are one of nature’s most perfect foods. Eggs are not only for breakfast. They are a great source of protein, They’re a good bang for your buck and pound for pound do more for you than any other food. They can go well with your snack preparations. You can easily prepare a hard-boiled egg with a piece of toast. Just be sure to choose the flax or wheat bread so you are completely low carb. After boling them I dump them in ice water to stop the cooking process. (this prevents that ugly gray color around the yolk). You can also prepare hard-boiled egg halves. Put it in a container and store it in the refrigerator. You can easily grab some when you feel like munching on something good.

Personally I’m an egg white freak. I feel like I can eat these guilt free with spinach, parsley or some other veggie. But thats another story. Facts below…

Exposed! Before and After Part II

This is a repost…Why? Because since I posted this article 3-4 months ago I’ve only lost 10lbs. I’m doing a couple of things this week since I was inspired by some old college friends. I won’t go into detail until I’ve formed a habit, hope to share the results soon.

Regardless of the reason(s) you are getting into better shape, make sure that you record your fitness history with before and after photo’s. Use those before photo’s to motivate you in continuing to reach your health and fitness goals. Later you may find that the photo’s you take are just what a friend or close relative needs to see to get into better shape.

Somebody with a low self body image may think, “My body sucks, why couldn’t I have been born as physically fit as ______ (insert name in blank)”. Having your own before and after shots can help motivate them to realize that they can also improve their own physiques. They don’t just have to sit and feel helpless. They don’t have to be stuck in the same body everyday.

Now I’m putting my picture to expose myself. I have nothing to hide and have fitness goals like everyone else. We can go on this journey together, in hopes of being better than we are now.

Sugar helps your diet?

I saw this picture posted on the web and thought this was the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a while. Obviously based on the photo quality this was circa 1970′s…no wonder we’re so screwed up when it comes to eating habits.

Read the text “Sugar…..only 18 calories per teaspoon, and it’s all energy”

The Perfect Diet?

So, I think it’s official…emotional eating is a NO..NO. After a heated argument with my wife I stormed out the house w/o my meals and started to runs some errands. In doing this I made several pitstops at XXXX and XXXX if you know what I mean. I mentioned XXXX and XXXX in my previous article top 5 fast food meals for dieters, how irresponsible was that?! Suggesting XXXX and XXXX as an alternative is setting you up for failure because it is too easy to fall into the trap. In fairness, it’s our fault if we are out of shape and over weight but I wanted to let the masses know there are alternatives.

I came across an interesting video on youtube called the perfect human diet. Is there such a thing? Obesity is an epidemic and we all know this…so whats the solution? CJ Hunt makes several good points and I hope this gets released. Info like this gets buried under the barrage of mega films…

The media messages that surround us come primarily from vested interests that ignore or ridicule innovative information that could help us.
