Buffie the Body: Healthy, My Ass

This is a repost since I’ve been on the run lately. The other day I was in the gym and overheard a conversation. One girl said “I look fine I just want to get rid of my flabby arms”. I looked at her and thought “hmm…you need to lose more than arms” First you can not spot reduce fat and second of all, why are all these girls infatuated with having a big butt like Buffie the body? Now I can not lie…I look but let us not confuse thick with healthy and let us begin to define black fitness!

This article has been floating around the web. I won’t take any credit for it, but I thought it was interesting.

According to a Village Voice article by Ben Westhoff, there are a slew of “urban” magazines finding success with men of color by replacing the traditional photo spreads of well-known bony models and actresses with unknown, “round the way sisters.” Looks and fitness — not required. Gi-normous butts (and weaves) — must have. Buffie, with a 45-inch ass, is the reigning queen of this scene and her popularity speaks to blacks’ normalization of a very un-p.c. fatness. Besides being a cover girl, Buffie appeared in the movie “ATL” as Big Booty Judy and is “as recognizable in the black community as some supermodels.”

I don’t see how Buffie’s the body is promoting obesity in our community. I see her body as unattainable and it certainly would not influence me to drink a ton of supplement shakes to fatten up my ass. I think her body shows the variety in WOC (women of colors) bodies. I think companies like McDonald’s, our causing our communities much more damage then Buffie the body. McDonald’s is trying to promote themselves as if they have healthy food. I have seen advertisements in Essence and during “Black in America” where McDonald’s was really trying to promote their “healthy items”….I’ll save that for another post. Back to Ms. Dickerson

According to the Voice, Buffie “eats nothing but junk food and sugary drinks, and she doesn’t work out.” Starting out at only 120 pounds 10 years ago, she developed her “attributes” by chugging supplement shakes in order to gain weight. “Black women don’t want to be skinny,” she said.

To my knowledge supplement shakes are healthy, so I don’t see the problem. It’s not like she had extra fat implanted in her butt. Buffie eats junk food and sugary drinks like a lot of WOC. She is no different than many women that I know.

It’s fairly common knowledge that many black (and Hispanic) men prefer their women larger than do other groups, a reality that launched Buffie on her path to glory. It is perhaps less well known that that preference has contributed to extremely high levels of obesity among black women.

It does appear that Black men like women who are more than just skin and bones, I don’t see the problem with that. Has this preference really contributed to extremely high levels of obesity among black women? She doesn’t site any research so we can’t be sure. We can be sure that are there a ton of other factors that contribute to obesity rates like; lack of access to safe areas, lack of education, lack resources (how to care for your hair, eat right), time, money for fresh foods, etc. I wish she spent some time focusing on some of this issues and offering some suggestions, that would have been more worth her time.

I don’t think that Debra Dickerson brought anything new to the table. We already know that we are in danger with our alarming obesity rates. Blaming Buffie the Body or Black Men for our problem will do nothing for us. We have to help each other. I mentioned in a previous post that some of us are privileged. We have access to a gym, money to buy fresh fruits and veggies, and time to take care of ourselves. Those of us that are privileged have to help other women. Encourage your sister, cousins, friends to make arrangements to exercise. Help them find and use the resources that are available to them.

I am curious is Buffie the body, the woman pictured? She certainly does not look obese, or even fat. She has a tiny waist, with a firm toned butt, and thighs. Anyone who is obese can not wear that dress. If she eats just junk food, then she has been blessed by genetics with a naturally toned body. I am white, and female, and I think she is beautiful, and stunning. If black men are attracted to a more curvy woman, than that is their preference, plain and simple. I think we need to redefine what fat, or obese is, if this is what we are calling either of those things.

To be honest this was one of the more flattering pictures i found on the net do a search and you'll see wht i mean. also the photographer should get more credit for the angle and the fact that its black and white…trust me …makes a big difference. i had a girl friend that would take 5mins to pack her butt into a pair of jeans…as nice as it was behind doors when see let it out it was jello city…with that said i had fun but it was not healthy but when men are givin you looks and whistles the question remains why change? why create a definition?

I know it is against our society's norms, but…women are genetically meant to be fat. I am small but have a small waist and bigger hips a but and breast. And people have said, wow, you are curvy , even though I am small and not over weight at all. Eveyone is different and honestly When I look at women big ass and hips and bobs are realy pretty, even if it seems "FAT"…we are supposed to be fat, really it is healthier, sometimes I wish I was fater thn I am, I don't care what vogue sa buck it. Fatten up ladies, big is beautiful, I have a big butt, but I wouldn't mind havingher big butt, HOT! Peace!

i dont mind myself but i do know women who are thick but can run a solid 7 min mile, lift weights, squat and run if they had too…i dont want to confuse strong healthy thick with fat that are stuffed into jeans. or some hip hugging device that supports that…i just want people to understand there is a difference. the fat that is considered healthy is needed in the stone ages for rearing children today we have blankets and heaters.

She is not obese! Just because she has a big butt doesn't make her obese

not true, in the USMC if your body weight wasn’t on spot with your height as long as they couldn’t pinch the fat on your waist you were good. I knew a woman in the USMC (a drill instructor, they have to be in tip top shape) that had a bum just like her. She has lean legs, a small waist, and lean arms. She wouldn’t be crossing over. And actually yeah you can put on weight with fat in your butt that is true. But you can also build your glute muscles. Think about the boy who was a stick in high school who becomes mr. universe. You can eat healthy, lots of protein, and shakes, workout and still have curves. Especially a woman, all women of all races truly are meant to have curves. Not be fat have curves there is a difference. As a matter of fact Doctors state when you have to worry about heart problems is when your waist is over a certain amount of inches, 37 I believe for women and 40 inches for men. Then you should worry about your ldl levels that woman has a beautiful body and she is in perfect shape. When I was in the USMC I always had a booty and I was never considered to be obese and still have a butt now 43.5 inches (just measured). So I am pretty sure those calculations on her bum were wrong because my butt doesn’t even compare to hers at all (honestly I wish my bum looked like hers).

I would consider Buffie obese, If you're referring to her big butt, itta not even real!!. I'm considered thick to most people of society, and I eat very healthy! It also has to do with genetics.
