Black Athletes, White Trophies/Lovers...Why?

I was going to write and give you guys a progress report, but I stumbled upon this well written article I just had to share from the writers of www.urbansportstalk.wordpress.com.

Do I care?….kind of, there are so many good women and men out there. I do think you should marry at your level but you don’t have to go out of your race to do it. It’s not so much a white thing …it’s more like they’re just too lazy to find the right one. But I do seem to look at these guys differently…like a Forty Million Dollar Slave.

Kobe Bryant and wife Mrs. why do I need a 5 million dollar ring to accept your apology?

M. Strahan & Former Jean Strahan…Can we say WIPEOUT!

bmd-michael-strahan-450a121807

Reggie Bush & Kim Kardashian… is it our business to ask why he isn’t with a Black Woman?

kim

Richard Jefferson (NBA Milwaukee Bucks) & wife Teresa Lourenco… he has a 6-yr. 78 million dollar contract… was a Black Woman ever given a chance?

rich

Venus Williams & Hank Kuehne… raised in Compton, CA she is now one of the most famous athletes in the world… where is her King?

On November 4, 2008, America elected a Black Man as the President-Elect of the United States of America. This historic event has caused many Americans (especially w/in the Black Community) to examine many issues surrounding “race” that have been either taboo or only talked about honestly when one is in the midst of their own ethnic group. We felt that we should be no different at Urban Sports Talk & Entertainment… so we are asking you to give your thoughts about “race” as it relates to Black Athletes involved in interracial relationships.

I decided to pen this post mainly because of a conversation I had with my cousin recently. Given my background as a former football player, he wanted my perspective on Black (Male) Athletes dating White Women. He just cannot understand how these athletes are raised in Black neighborhoods, attend Black (k – 12) Schools, worship in Black Churches then go off and leave Black Women behind. His challenge to me was to defend that reality for those athletes.

I didn’t care to provide an excuse because I don’t believe a person’s decision to date someone of another ethnicity is shameful. What I did talk about is how a Black Athlete’s circumstances can lead him (them) to make certain choices. Many of which were never available prior to him/her being highlighted for athletic prowess.

For instance, the vast majority of Black Athletes are removed from Black areas when they are given scholarships to attend White Colleges. This is the initial step towards assimilating into the Majority Society. For many Black Athletes, this will be their first time attending a class as the minority student. He/she will be living around tens of thousands of non-Blacks for the coming years as they are being trained to play sports at a high level. His/her world view is being shaped during this time as he/she is experiencing independence from parents, family and their community. It is during this time when they are frequently socializing with many diverse groups of people which they will ultimately be influenced by for the years to come.

My cousin wasn’t impressed and didn’t want to hear that lame excuse as he called it. What are your thoughts? Are we passed this issue or should Black Athletes be challenged for their decisions to date outside of their race?

Had enough? If not you can always check out my fellow blogger abagond his recent post  Black men, White women is fire…Let the comments begin.

Buffie the Body: Healthy, My Ass

This is a repost since I’ve been on the run lately. The other day I was in the gym and overheard a conversation. One girl said “I look fine I just want to get rid of my flabby arms”. I looked at her and thought “hmm…you need to lose more than arms” First you can not spot reduce fat and second of all, why are all these girls infatuated with having a big butt like Buffie the body? Now I can not lie…I look but let us not confuse thick with healthy and let us begin to define black fitness!

This article has been floating around the web. I won’t take any credit for it, but I thought it was interesting.

According to a Village Voice article by Ben Westhoff, there are a slew of “urban” magazines finding success with men of color by replacing the traditional photo spreads of well-known bony models and actresses with unknown, “round the way sisters.” Looks and fitness — not required. Gi-normous butts (and weaves) — must have. Buffie, with a 45-inch ass, is the reigning queen of this scene and her popularity speaks to blacks’ normalization of a very un-p.c. fatness. Besides being a cover girl, Buffie appeared in the movie “ATL” as Big Booty Judy and is “as recognizable in the black community as some supermodels.”

I don’t see how Buffie’s the body is promoting obesity in our community. I see her body as unattainable and it certainly would not influence me to drink a ton of supplement shakes to fatten up my ass. I think her body shows the variety in WOC (women of colors) bodies. I think companies like McDonald’s, our causing our communities much more damage then Buffie the body. McDonald’s is trying to promote themselves as if they have healthy food. I have seen advertisements in Essence and during “Black in America” where McDonald’s was really trying to promote their “healthy items”….I’ll save that for another post. Back to Ms. Dickerson

According to the Voice, Buffie “eats nothing but junk food and sugary drinks, and she doesn’t work out.” Starting out at only 120 pounds 10 years ago, she developed her “attributes” by chugging supplement shakes in order to gain weight. “Black women don’t want to be skinny,” she said.

To my knowledge supplement shakes are healthy, so I don’t see the problem. It’s not like she had extra fat implanted in her butt. Buffie eats junk food and sugary drinks like a lot of WOC. She is no different than many women that I know.

It’s fairly common knowledge that many black (and Hispanic) men prefer their women larger than do other groups, a reality that launched Buffie on her path to glory. It is perhaps less well known that that preference has contributed to extremely high levels of obesity among black women.

It does appear that Black men like women who are more than just skin and bones, I don’t see the problem with that. Has this preference really contributed to extremely high levels of obesity among black women? She doesn’t site any research so we can’t be sure. We can be sure that are there a ton of other factors that contribute to obesity rates like; lack of access to safe areas, lack of education, lack resources (how to care for your hair, eat right), time, money for fresh foods, etc. I wish she spent some time focusing on some of this issues and offering some suggestions, that would have been more worth her time.

I don’t think that Debra Dickerson brought anything new to the table. We already know that we are in danger with our alarming obesity rates. Blaming Buffie the Body or Black Men for our problem will do nothing for us. We have to help each other. I mentioned in a previous post that some of us are privileged. We have access to a gym, money to buy fresh fruits and veggies, and time to take care of ourselves. Those of us that are privileged have to help other women. Encourage your sister, cousins, friends to make arrangements to exercise. Help them find and use the resources that are available to them.

Oprah Winfrey weighs 200 pounds

oprah
Oprah

I LOVE ME SOME OPRAH!

I just wanted to get this clear but what is the problem with the weight?

The talk show queen continues the honesty, saying in the January issue of “O” magazine out Tuesday that she now weighs 200 pounds and has “fallen off the wagon” when it comes to healthy living.

“I’m mad at myself,” Winfrey writes in an article provided early to The Associated Press by Harpo Productions.

“I’m embarrassed,” she writes. “I can’t believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I’m still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think, `How did I let this happen again?’”

Why do I Love me some Oprah?

She is honest and upfront. The problem of obesity is not an average american problem, it is a whole american problem. With her schedule it’s amazing it hasn’t happened sooner. Although I’ve been noticing the weight gain, I thought she would get it under control like she does everything else. The only dissapointing part is for someone with unlimited resources and wealth, hiring a personal trainer or personal chef seems like a no brainer.

Like I said,  Oprah can do no wrong. She has rebounded and admitted:  ”I definitely wasn’t setting an example,” she writes. “I was talking the talk, but I wasn’t walking the walk. And that was very disappointing to me.”

I had friend that had a saying:

 “WINNERS DO ONE THING…..THEY WIN!”

Hope she gets with her buddy Bob Greene and gets it together.

I know she will.

Burn Fat Fast or at least in No Time

Firstly, I’d like to say that any one of these methods on it’s own should save you hours of time each week and you should be able to burn at the VERY least 1-2 pounds of fat each week if you can integrate all three methods into your life.

I survived the Thanksgiving week without gaining weight. I did a 2 day detox with just fruit, veggies and lot of water.

Burning Fat Fast!

Step 1. Exercising SMART. Doing mindless cardio in the ‘fat burning zone’ will only burn fat while you’re at the gym. Some alternatives to getting stuck in this trap is to do just 5 minutes per day of exercise that will boost your metabolism all day long and burn you more fat while you are sitting in front of the couch.

Some quick ideas:

Do 5 minutes of skipping (as much as you can without stopping) in the commercial breaks at home.
Do 5 minutes of non-stop, bodyweight squats
Go for a 5 minute bike ride as fast as you can instead of a 30 minute walk. (HIIT Method)

Step 2. Remove parasites from your body. Using natural cleansing programs to remove nasty parasitic worms from your body is an easy, healthy way to burn fat quickly. You just need to be sure that the parasite cleansing product is not going to be detrimental to your health. These courses usually last for 30 to 60 days and you will notice the difference immediately. I started using BioBeads to promote healthy flora…this might be the difference maker.

Step 3. Drink water …. Nuff said! Helps with metabolism and food digestion.

Does size matter II: A male perspective

This blog was inspired by a sister I met not too long ago. She has a great blog focused on the issues of black women www.thefitnessgoddess.blogspot.com. And like an argument on a Sunday afternoon the topic of size and image came up. Check it out and show some love right HERE

In this day and age it is clear and absolute that we see images of sexy more now than ever before. My parents didn’t have an example of what fresh was besides the images on Soul Train. Now there are magazines, TV, Internet and all other kinds of media. In addition to the said media you have the fashion and image critics.

We all know body image is connected to self- esteem. Women are rated/ranked on looks and desirability instead of personal achievement like their male counterparts. So would it make sense that somewhere down the line our sisters, who have been told what to do for years, might rebel? Rebel, by eating what they want and not subscribing to said images. When I think rebel…. I think of the comedian Mo`Nique. She rants and raves about how BBW are large and in charge. She carries herself well and there are plenty of men who would chase her but are we serious here? She might be doing many sisters and in justice by holding a torch for the unheard and large.

GET IN SHAPE AND LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE PERIOD.

Now, I have never looked at a girl and said wow what a great size 4. What I believe to be a key indicator is a healthy waist to hip ratio. If you are small like Jada or big like “Jackie” from 227, both these women have one thing in common a healthy WHR.
WHR of black Hollywood femme fatales would be somewhere around 0.7-0.9. Simply put the WHR is defined as a small waist and big butt alla J. Lo. or Lela Rochon.

Seriously, I remember when I was in college a classmate of mine said “my friends are giving me a hard time” I said “why? What did you do?” He said, in a unassuming voice “nothing my girlfriend is losing a weight.” You see, this was a Nigerian brother where thick healthy women are wanted and revered. You can line up 10 women all weighing 150lbs and you will discover 10 different body types. But the one with the good WHR and is confident will shine above all.
