My Fitness Journey

Marriage, work, family, school and stress can cause havoc on the body. I reached peak physical condition twice in my life senior year of college (strength wise) and when I moved to the south for a new job (long story). Either way the journey is finding a fitness balance and using food as medicine. Being the strongest is not the most important but having a beach body and functional fitness is the goal. There are ups and downs but there will always be a consistent goal of getting my blackfitness on.

Laila Ali is Losing Weight and Getting Fit

Lovely boxer Laila Ali just gave birth to her second child a little over a month ago, but she’s still busy as ever; maybe even more so.  On top of managing two kids now and a husband, she’s also launching a hair care and skin care line; is president of the Women’s Sports Foundation; and is working with the espnW campaign. In addition to all of that, she’s been tracking her weight loss on facebook.

Becoming president of The Women’s Sports Foundation seems like a natural thing for her to do after her boxing career because it promotes sports, health, and education for women and young girls. She and espnW want women and girls to have a place to turn for inspiration when it comes to getting fit and healthy and then staying that way.

Laila, herself, has about 25-30 more pounds to lose before reaching her own weight goal, but she’s turned it into a way to inspire others by challenging others on facebook to do the same.

“Given the problem we have with obesity in this country,” she explains, “I thought this would be a good opportunity to challenge myself, and to challenge those who want to participate, to get fit now. Losing weight, getting fit and getting healthy does not have to be a New Year’s resolution. The time is now!”

Jordin Sparks’ Weight Loss Twitter Pic – Amazing!

American Idol’s Jordin Sparks is proud to show off her slimmer figure since losing 30lbs in recent months. Sparks posted new photos of herself on her Twitter page modeling in an orange polka dot bikini. The photos reveal Jordin’s toned body with defined abs and slimmer thighs.

In 2009 Jordin stated she would not conform to the obsession Hollywood has with being thin. At the time Sparks said she loved her curves and loved food. She refused to be ‘the stick-thin thing’ and showed off her voluptuous figure.

During the same year Jordin began working with a personal trainer while on tour with the Jonas Brothers. Since then Jordin has steadily shed pounds with the help of her personal trainer. Jordin’s trainer uses an array of exercises to keep the singer on her toes.

She says:

‘He doesn’t keep the same thing every time, so he shocks the body so you’re running, you’re doing throw-downs, you’re doing stairs, you’re doing lunges.

‘I’ve done all of those in the past four days, and I will tell you that my butt hurts very badly.’

Jordin seems happy to show off her recent weight loss while still retaining some of her curves. As she posted along with her Twitter photos that:

‘I don’t know why but my bathing suit reminds me of fruity pebbles. :)

Jordin loves her new form and is presently working on her next studio album. The youngest winner in American Idol history is now 21-years-old and is best known for her hit song No Air.

Raven Symone is Unrecognizable After Her Weight Loss!

When you see this picture, who comes into your mind? Nicole Richie, is that you? But no, that is not Nicole Richie, mom to Harlow and Sparrow and wife to Joel Madden. That is Disney Star, Raven Symone!

Raven began as a child model before moving into the acting industry. She starred in shows including The Cosby Show and films such as Dr. Doolittle before having her very own show, That’s So Raven in the Disney Channel.

Based on her recent photos, Raven Symone, bears an uncanny resemblance to Nicole Richie. With her steady weight loss, Raven is unrecognizable nowadays. At a recent charity event, 18th Annual Race to Erase MS, the 25-year-old actress showed off her latest body in a leopard-print dress. It is not known how many pounds Raven has lost so far.

Raven once called herself ‘thick and fabulous’. She also insisted that she was more than happy and confident with her curvy figure. But still, she slimmed down.

Recently, Raven admitted that she has been struggling to come to terms with the reactions her new figure attracts. She also began wearing bigger clothes to hide her new figure because she doesn’t like the way people stare at her.

I thought I looked fabulous before and nobody else did. So, whatever.”

Spring Clean Your Body: Top 10 Detox Foods

Spring Clean Your Body: Top 10 Detox Foods

Want to baby your liver? Keep your GI tract fit? Flush out toxins? These 10 foods — many of them chosen by RealAge experts Drs. Oz and Roizen — can spring clean your body and keep refreshing your vital parts all year ’round. No need to fast. Just take these three steps:

  • “Eat clean,” avoiding processed foods and chemical additives.
  • Stay well hydrated by drinking lots of filtered water.
  • Include some of these 10 foods in several meals throughout the week.

The Detox Top 10

  1. Leafy green vegetables. Eat them raw in a salad, throw them into a broth, steam them and mix with rice or add to an omelet, or puree them into juices. The chlorophyll in greens helps swab out environmental toxins (heavy metals, pesticides). It’s also an all-around liver protector, which your liver needs since it’s your major domo detoxifier.
  2. Lemons. Fresh lemonade made with filtered water will keep you hydrated, and its vitamin C helps convert toxins into a water-soluble form that’s easily flushed away. (Add some pureed greens — see above — to further bolster your C level.) Here’s another cleanse that really works.
  3. Watercress. Put a handful into salads, soups, and sandwiches. The peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps the flushing process. Plus cress is a mineral mine, rich in iron, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium.
  4. Garlic. Add it to everything — salads, sauces, spreads. In addition to the heart-friendly bulb’s cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes. Research also indicates that garlic diminishes a process that creates cancer-causing compounds in your body.
  5. Green tea. This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more water into your system. Bonus: It contains catechins, which speed up liver activity. Learn more about how to love your liver.
  6. Broccoli sprouts. They pack 20 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than the grown-up vegetable. Research suggests that eating the sprouts (they have a radish-like taste) kills off H. Pylori bacteria that causes stomach irritation and ulcers.
  7. Sesame seeds. They’re credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol and other chemicals. For a concentrated form, try tahini, the yummy sesame seed paste that’s a staple of Middle Eastern cooking.
  8. Cabbage. There are two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver, and this potent veggie helps activate both of them. It’s the largest member of the Brassica veggie family, all of which delivers colon-cancer fighting isothicyanates and vitamin C. Coleslaw, anyone?
  9. Psyllium. This plant’s bursting with soluble fiber, which mops up toxins (cholesterol, too) and helps clear them out. Stir powdered psyllium into juice to help cleanse your colon, or have psyllium-fortified Bran Buds for breakfast. (Start with a small amount and gradually increase your dose as your GI tract becomes used to it.)
  10.  Fruits, fruits, fruits. They’re full of almost all the good things listed above — vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, and assorted antioxidants. Besides, nothing tastes better than a ripe mango, perfect pear, or fresh berries.

Ultimate Detox Recipe: Easy Wilted Garlic-Sesame Salad

Toss dark green leafy vegetables in hot, garlicky oil for a cleansing — and delicious — dish.

4 servings, about 65 calories each

1 tsp. olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 lb. spinach, stemmed,
or 1 lb. Swiss chard, stems sliced, leaves torn
or 1 lb. mixture of spinach and watercress
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 tsp. sesame seeds for garnish

Warm oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and stir until lightly browned, about 45 seconds. Add greens (do in two batches if necessary) and toss until just wilted, 2 to 4 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Snooki’s Weight Loss for Jersey Shore’s Season 4 in Italy!

Nicole Polizzi, more popularly known as  Snooki, slims down in preparation for Season 4 of her hit MTV reality series, “Jersey Shore” that will be shot in Italy.  I hate this chick but she actually looks good here. In season 1, the cast made their smashing debut at the Jersey Shore. In Season 2, they tore up Miami Beach. They returned to  Jersey Shore for Season 3. Season 4 will be filmed in Italy (I’m sure the Italians are so excited that the Jersey Shore gang will be fist pumping in their backyard) and will be aired in late 2011.

Snooki was actually born in Chile in 1987 and is not Italian. She was adopted when she was six months old and was raised by Italian-American parents. She grew up and attended school in New York and apparently fit right in with the Guido lifestyle. She revealed that she had an eating disorder when she was in high school and at one point, she only weighed 79 pounds!

But now, Snooki is trying to live a healthier lifestyle.  In a series of tweets in her Twitter account, Snooki announced that:

“Water is my new best friend. #dieting.”

“As everyone’s planning their night at the club, I’m wondering when Golds closes. lol. #motivated”

Clearly, Snooki has been dieting and hitting the gym to have a slimmer and fitter body. She also posted a new photo of herself in Twitter with a toner body. The caption reads “Ready for Summaaa!!!”

6 Ways to Win the Weight Battle

Think the number-one roadblock to being fit is the number of calories you take in? Think again. The key to healthy, successful weight loss isn’t just about getting the right information—it’s about knowing how to use that information. It’s why those extra pounds won’t budge, despite your understanding the importance of calories in versus calories out, knowing the difference between good and bad carbs, and being diligent about mixing cardio with strength training. If you’ve been feeling discouraged, rest assured that you’re not alone. We spoke with medical, nutrition and fitness experts and asked them one simple question: “What are we missing?” Read on to discover the six most important ways to use the mind-body connection to help your weight-loss efforts rather than hinder them.

Accept that diets don’t help you in the long run.

Every year you try to eat less and less, but gain more and more. Sure, some of this has to do with the biology of aging, but it also has to do with the damage all those fad diets have done to your metabolism. There’s no miracle pill or plan that can lead to easy weight loss. “People just cycle between these fads, these radical wacky diets, and they will lose weight, but then they get sick of it,” says Timothy Harlan, MD, medical director at the Tulane University School of Medicine and author of Just Tell Me What to Eat! This leads to gaining back the weight, which puts you back at square one. “It’s really important to know why women eat like birds and look like elephants as they get older,” says Eric Braverman, MD, author of Younger (Thinner) You Diet. “They develop this horrific situation in which they eat 1,000 calories and gain weight…the metabolic starvation that these girls are doing [leads to] the destruction of their health.” Instead of approaching food with a deprivation mindset, consider feasible, small changes that you can make over the long term. Braverman recommends increasing exercise and increasing “chew food”—highly nutritious and fibrous but low-calorie foods, such as an apple instead of apple juice. Photo: Shutterstock

Focus on fitness, not thinness.

In our body-obsessed culture with ultra-thin celebrities setting the trend, it’s hard to remember that your health and well-being are about more than being a particular pants size. “Do it for your health, do it to stimulate your mind and find passion,” says Ramona Braganza, celebrity trainer and fitness expert at Gold Gym. “It’s not about getting a Hollywood body.” Try focusing more on how you feel rather than what the scale says. “Women think they’re sexier when they’re thin, flabby Gumbys. They haven’t incorporated a really liberating feminist model of nutrition, fitness and discipline into their lives,” Dr. Braverman says. By focusing on being fit and feeling healthy—keeping your age in mind—you’ll be better equipped to hit your ideal weight. “There are happy people in all different shapes and sizes, so if you’re picking your model person, it has to be somebody realistic,” says Braganza. “Your body changes, and I think it’s hard for women to accept that they won’t always have their 25-year-old body. So you have to look for a new role model. My role model is my 75-year-old mom, who teaches Zumba classes. You want to look ahead of you, not behind you.” Photo: Shutterstock

Make friends with food.

Losing weight should not mean eating bland, flavorless food. And it definitely should not entail being hungry all the time. Think about food as nourishment, and make it as delicious as possible. In fact, if you do it right, you can eat just as much, if not more than before. “I’m a big believer in eating great food, but it’s about caloric density. If you’re going to take in fewer calories, those calories should be much larger portions,” Dr. Harlan says. His example: beef stroganoff. Make it with the same ingredients, but use more mushrooms and less beef (the leaner the better). You’ll consume fewer overall calories, but more food, and still feel satisfied. “We respond to volume of food, and when the volume is high and we feel filled up, we’ll stop eating,” Dr. Harlan adds. “That’s how I craft a recipe. I ask myself, ‘How can I make this portion larger, preserve the flavor—or make it more even delicious—and keep it at the same number of calories?’” Photo: Shutterstock

Start small and build slowly.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to lose weight is going to extremes. Be mindful of where you are, and respect your limits. With this in mind, start small and build slowly. “People don’t know how to get started. But I’d be happy if you just went out and walked three days a week,” Dr. Harlan says. “But instead, people will go out and injure themselves and they’ll get put off. So starting very low-impact, going slowly and building up very carefully is the number-one key with exercise.” Braganza agrees: “When you’re starting, anything is better than nothing. Go for a regular walk and then include a hill. Then go at a faster pace, and then step into the gym,” she says. “Lower impact to start with, and then go on to the higher-impact exercises once you’ve built up your strength.” Photo: Shutterstock

Concentrate on commitment more than intensity.

You don’t have to log endless hours at the gym to become healthier, but a commitment to an exercise regimen is essential. “When I’m talking to patients, the first thing I do is work on time. We schedule everything in our lives, but we don’t book exercise,” Dr. Harlan says. “If I can just get them to start by penciling in that 30 minutes three times a week, that’s enough to get them started.” In fact, despite what we may think, celebrities aren’t spending every waking second in the gym to get those beautiful bodies. What they are doing, however, is committing to a weekly routine, and giving it their all when they’re there. “My people work out pretty conservatively about four days a week for an hour,” says Braganza, who has trained such stars as Jessica Alba and Halle Berry. Stop obsessing about your weight.

The fastest way to misery is to obsess over dieting and weight loss. It’s not only bad for your self-esteem, but it will sabotage your weight-loss efforts, too. “I was a cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders, and we had regular weigh-ins. The girls gained during the season because they were so concerned about it. Then during off-season, the weight just fell off. You store fat when you’re stressed. There is a huge correlation between [stress] and the body,” says wellness coach Cassandra Corum. (Not to mention the natural fluctuations caused by hormones and age.) With this in mind, focus on long-term goals rather than micro-managing your life. “Health is not a 30-day thing, a 60- or a 90-day thing. Take the advice, use what you already know and do it every day,” Corum says
